Presidents Report December 2019
It's that time of year where many of you are about to take a well-earned break from your day to day business operations and spend some quality time with family and friends for the festive season. But before you run off into the sunset with your cocktail in hand there are a few things that you may like to consider for the security and safety of your business and property to ensure that you are able to reopen upon your return.

Security are your premises secure? I mean are they really secure.

  • Have you checked the locks on doors, windows and access gates etc and are they well maintained?
  • Have you removed cash from the premises and do you have something to identify that no cash is kept on the premises so that it makes people think carefully if trying to access the business is worth it?
  • Have you contacted your security company and advised of your closure period? If they know that no one should be on site for certain periods they can better respond to matters as they are noted.
  • Does your security company have several contact numbers for a keyholder? Sometimes business owners and managers travel away on holiday. Who should your security company contact if you are not available?
  • Have you bought in any "movables" so that damage cannot be caused to glass etc?
Insurance: Have you checked the currency on your business insurance?
  • Is there a requirement to advise your insurer in advance of any closure periods?

Safety What is your safety plan?

  • What lights will be on inside or outside the business so that if something occurs, police and or security have good lines of sight inside and out and can detect the presence of others without having safety concerns. They have family to go home to as well. Help them to help you.
  • Have you prepared the premises to prevent fire? The current climate on the Central Coast is still a little volatile. Embers can set fire to property quickly.
  • Remove things from outside which could easily catch fire.
  • Remove rubbish and waste.
  • Bring in covers off chairs and outdoor settings

Cleaning:

  • Are cleaners aware of your closing period? Are they aware of your security contacts if they notice something odd and can advise you or your security company?
  • Will they remove rubbish and put in bins so that it's not a hazard?

Taking some simple steps now before you go can assist you when you are ready to come back. Being prepared is better than being caught out and losing time and money when you should be trading.

The Chamber office will close on Tuesday 24th December 2019 and reopen on the 2nd January 2020. Over the break all contact can be directed by email to president@gebc.com.au. This email address will be monitored all days over the break. If you, as a member need any assistance please feel free to contact us and where possible we will be here to help.

On behalf of the Chamber Executive, Board and office team I would like to take this opportunity to extend to you all our best wishes for a safe and happy festive season. Enjoy the Christmas and New Year break and we look forward to having an amazing year in 2020 for local business.

Regards

Rod Dever
